Alfred Lor Shoots His Own

A photo blog - non commercial - just the stuff I Love.

The images below link to photo-series of current or recently completed projects.

I shoot mostly editorial and commercial photography for a living but shooting stories like the ones below are what I most enjoy.

All images in the respective series below would like to hang on walls - I am looking for a sponsor/partner/philanthropist to help in getting these images up on walls, in galleries and then (hopefully) in homes. Part profits to go toward those depicted or their charities.

Kim’s House - Click on the image to view the whole series.

(This series is effectively an extension of the ‘Salt River Valley’ series)

Kim is a local artist who lives in a old cottage in the Salt River Valley, just outside Knysna - South Africa. Her house is full… full of art, full of feeling, full of moments. The walls are covered in fragments of its past, its past people and their lives. A child’s hand print is visible on a painted door, a message or ‘eureka’ moment’ reminder is scribbled on a hallway wall, a temporary sculpture of found objects seems to ebb and flow with each visit I make…

This series is an ongoing project, I hope to photograph a few more local artist’s homes in the next couple of weeks…. might make a nice book.

ECD for Monaco Humanitaire - Click on the image to view the whole series.

This series was shot for Monaco Humanitaire as part of an exhibition illustrating the impact the organisation is having on the lives of people in Africa and the rest of the world. The images in this series illustrate ECD (Early Childhood Development) in poorer parts of Cape Town and its surrounding rural areas as well as (hopefully) just a little of the magic these beautiful African children radiate even when faced with daily poverty and turmoil.

The Pink by Night Series - Click on the image to view the whole series.

This series was shot at the ‘Knysna Pink Loerie Festival’ backstage at a Drag Queen Competition.
The Pink Loerie Festival is an annual week long Gay/Lesbian Festival in the small coastal town of Knysna, in South Africa. It is a fairly contentious event, and not loved by all residents even though it brings valuable (pink) feet to the mainly tourist driven area.

The images in this series were shot in the dressing/changing area for the Drag Queen Contest.

I had actually planned to shoot the event - but caught a glimpse of the backstage area and asked if I take a few photos inside. I ended up shooing all my available memory in the changing area. The images were shot using the (minimal) available light - really magical thing soupy light… almost womb like and just right (I hope) for these images of transformation, bravery and inhibition.

The Salt River Series - Click on the image to view the whole series.

Hidden behind the bustling tourist town of Knysna, on the South African coastline is a small valley called Salt River Valley. It has been a rural island in the middle of a quickly developing area for as long as I have known Knysna. There are a hand full of cottages scattered about the valley, many of the Heritage Buildings and all housing interesting people, a real eclectic mix. The valley itself is beautiful, and for me has always held a mystic element, perhaps because of the mist generated on cold winter mornings. It seems as if the rustic days in this valley are numbered though, developers on the horizon. I have shot this series, because I think that people don’t realize the magic and beauty that will be lost if this all disappears, and because I think many people drive right through this valley without feeling her spirit, and natural beauty.

As always, I am looking for a sponsor/partner/philanthropist to help in getting these images up on walls, in galleries and then (hopefully) in homes. Alternatively, if you would like to buy a print drop me a line/email and I will forward you a PDF catalogue of this series with all the images, print options and prices.

Part profits to go toward those that will lose their homes if the bulldozers arrive.

Anyone who would like to know more about the valley and its future should contact Patsy at…
